Jeff Britton, formerly race engineer for Access Motorsports and one of the original members of Greg Ray's IndyCar Series team, has been granted his release by the team in order to pursue other opportunities.

Ray contested the opening round of this year's Indy Racing League programme at Homestead last week, taking a 14th place finish, and credited Britton with playing a big part in getting the Access Motorsports team off the ground.

Newman/Haas Racing announced today the departure of senior engineer Peter Gibbons who will leave the four-time Champ Car World Series champions.

Gibbons joined the team as race engineer late in 1991 from Penske Racing and was promoted to senior engineer in 2001.

"I would like to thank Peter for his contribution to the team over the years," said Carl Haas, co-owner of Newman/Haas Racing.

Hideki Noda will make his racing return to the IRL at Gateway International Raceway on August 25th. Rookie Noda will drive the No. 28 Nimo Eikoh/Indy Regency Racing G Force/Chevrolet/Firestone fielded by Indy Regency Racing.

Noda, from Osaka, Japan, started the first three races of this season with Convergent Racing, with a best finish of 10th at Phoenix. Noda won an Indy Lights race in 1997 at Portland, Ore., while driving for Indy Regency.

Noda gets Gateway nod.

Brazilian veteran Mauricio Gugelmin was in hospital last night after suffering a heavy crash in opening practice for this weekend's Firestone Firehawk 600 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Gugelmin was running alone when his PacWest Reynard-Toyota spun out at turn two, hitting the wall and leaving the driver in need of medical attention. This resulted in him being extricated from the car and transferred to a local medical centre for checks.
